11-9-26 (New Moon)
“Happy Teachers’ Day! the Boy greeted as he handed me his gift of vanilla wafer rectangles.
“Thank you for yr blessings!” I enthused.
The Giver smiled in delight as I shared why this particular brand of wafer is a luxury to me that I do not casually allow myself to indulge in.
“I bought it with my own pocket money,” he quipped proudly after he & his tuition mates learnt of Loacker’s 100 year old history & place of origin.
Then the Boy’s smile slowly faded into a look of concern as he saw me preparing to share my rectangles of delight with his class.
Watching me make the rounds and his mates gingerly lifting up his precious wafers like they were some delicate artefacts, he protested, “But I bought them for you!”
“And now you see how your kindness to me has blessed so many,” I said, as I approached the Giver with the last 2 pieces of wafer.
Unaware that the last piece of wafer was obscured by the wrapper, he refused to take his share but offered, “No, Ms Ong. You can have mine.”
“We have enough for all,” I assured him before revealing the hidden piece.
This time the Boy’s smile returned with an even greater radiance when he realised just how big his heart could be.
